China is angry at the United States for supplying weapons to Taiwan that will make a Chinese military invasion of Taiwan more difficult. In response, China is supplying Russia with technology to manufacture weapons that it needs for its invasion of Ukraine. It is also buying Russia's oil and other products, and not placing restrictions on Chinese companies making the precursor chemicals to Fentanyl which is being distributed in the United States.
China had high regard for Henry Kissinger, Nixon's Secretary of State. It is interesting to consider what he would recommend in this situation. He would likely suggest that if the United States wants cooperation on Fentanyl and Ukraine, it must be prepared to give up on Taiwan. After all, the citizens of Taiwan are not citizens of the United States. While we do not like to see a democratic society forced into totalitarianism, the United States does not have the resources to play world policeman given its own political and economic situation.
China has consistently followed a policy of industrial espionage and intellectual property theft from other advanced countries. It has consistently pushed the boundaries of ocean fishing and transportation routes along its entire ocean borders. It has aggressively enlarged its military and now has the largest navy in the world.
If the United States really wants China's help with fentanyl and Ukraine, the United States must change its policy toward China. It must learn to produce critical components in North America that are now being manufactured in China. It must also move the production of critical items in Taiwan to North America. Most importantly, it must stop arming Taiwan. That is a policy Henry Kissinger would approve.
The world sees the United States as a great power in decline. China is clearly ascendant, with its emphasis on science, engineering, and technology. It publishes more scientific articles than any other county, and leads the United States in most advanced fields. The United States, given its budget, is heading to bankruptcy, and needs to rethink its position on all fronts.
One example of a brainless philosophy is the US government keeping the Chinese electric car company BYD out of the US market. Its presence would force American car companies to compete at the highest level or succumb. Most US automobile factory workers are already employed by foreign companies. There is no reason to keep out the latest technology except to become a backward country.
